Without a doubt, Shongweni is one of the most highly regarded and diverse farmers markets in South Africa. And Its right on your doorstep – a mere sixty minutes up-the-line when you climb aboard the upmarket ‘Holiday Express’.

Fresh garden produce, home-baked products, fabulous floral arrangements, creative crafts and fabrics, homebrew beers and wines, cheeses, chutneys, sauces; scrumptious desserts and delectable fast food stalls. On top of this, there are ample open spaces and playgrounds to keep the small fry safely entertained. And all of this just a comfortable one-hour train trip up the line from Durban.

Registration on day of departure will be in the Premier Business Lounge at Durban Railway Station. The Premier Business Lounge can be accessed up the ramp from Jeff Taylor Crescent, which is between Umgeni Road and Masabalala Yengwa Avenue (previously NMR Avenue), just to the north of Durban’s central business district, and not far from the intersection with Somtseu Road.  Secure, boom-protected parking is available to Holiday Express clients, up the ramp on the second floor just outside the entrance to the Lounge.

PRASA levy a flat parking rate of R10.00 per vehicle for the day.

The route inland passes through two tunnels and stops will be made at the waterfalls to allow passengers to take photographs.

A range of refreshments, including wine, beer, soft drinks, biltong, peanuts and chips etc. will be available on the train. Remember to purchase your cash vouchers at registration.  You are also welcome to bring your own refreshments with you.

For the comfort of all passengers no smoking is allowed on the trains.

At this time of the year it should be warm.  Suggest you dress accordingly, but bring something warm should the conditions change.

Delicious snacks, pastries, light meals and refreshments, including a wide range of locally brewed craft beers will also available from the many stalls in the market.

In addition to the amazing mountain biking and running trails which operate from Sugar Rush Park, there is a huge, safe open grassed recreational area, plus a toddler zone and a kids pump track. Other exciting attractions include a Laser Tag, Putt Putt, the Rugby Fields and Trampoline Park. Entrance to the Park is free which includes the open park, play areas, pump track and forest trail for kids. All other activities operate separately – there are costs per attraction.

Visitors to Sugar Rush Park can relax in the Bold Restaurant which offers a breakfast and lunch menu, as well as a range of coffees, teas and juices. Sugar Rush Management request that only food purchased from the restaurant may be consumed on-site.

2 pm 31 December Arrive at the Premier Lounge at Durban Station and enjoy a welcome drink on arrival. The talented Milton will be on the platform, performing for your entertainment. Your cabin crew, dressed to impress will be awaiting your entrance at each carriage. Various characters to suit the “train” theme will be on board to keep you entertained. Expect music and PA announcements throughout the train for and lots of fun, fun, fun! Depart at 3 pm and travel for two hours to Pietermaritzburg Station and disembark to a red carpet, outdoor cinema and food vendors galore to gastronomically delight you, while a 22-piece band entertains and enthrals. Four hours later, we’ll depart for Durban and arrive at 11 pm, just in time to see the new year in with some more fun on the platform. This trip is suitable, and recommended for the whole family.
